Andrea Baldini, who won earlier the title in the individual competition for men’s foil, also brought Italy the title in the team’s event. In the match against Russia, the Italians were behind with the results up until the last team-match between Baldini and Renal Ganeev. The two began the fight at a result of 35:40, but gradually Grande Aldo, as he is called by his team-mates, began melting the difference until there was a tie at 43:43. That was when the controlled time ended. In the extra minute, Aldo made his ninth touché against Ganeev and with that put an end to the fight for the title – 44:43. Here is how the result was going after 35:40 – 38:40, 38:41, 39:41, 39:42, 40:42 / here Ganeev received a red card/, 40:43, 43:43, and in the extra minute – 44:43!

Today, the new-elected president of the European Fencing Confederation – Mr. Frantishek Janda and the president of the Bulgarian Fencing Federation – Mrs. Velichka Hristeva had a meeting with journalists, who have accreditations for the 22th European Fencing Championships in Plovdiv.
Mr. Janda declared that the main task for the European Confederation is to make a good marketing and promotion of the fencing.
“ In the present moment in Europe over 500 000 people are involved with fencing, and every week over 250 tournaments are being held in different countries in the Old Continent. This is the foundation that we should use to make these tournaments a good trading product and to sell them to televisions. This is very important for our future, because from that promotion we can get a lot of funds, which we need for the development of our sport. This is the only way to keep the leading position of fencing all over the world. There are 44 nations – members of our Confederation. But in each one of them our sport is on different level. In the future we have to do our best so that all the countries to be on similar level. Anyway, the great fencing nations well remain their leading positions, but we have to help the other to reach their level.” – said Mr. Janda. – “The European Championships in Plovdiv is organized perfectly and I want to thank to the Bulgarian Fencing Federation and to my good friend – Mrs. Velichka Hristeva personally. Everything was spectacular! In deed, you have one big “ mistake “ – you have ordered very hot weather for the Championships.”
Mrs. Hristeva thanked to Mr. Janda for his positive attitude and said that the Bulgarian fencers will do their best to be again among the great fencers of Europe. Mrs. Hristeva added that: “ The 14th place of Dobrin Gionov on the sabre competition makes us proud and gives us the feeling that we are in the right direction.”
